A colon endoscopy is basically a medical procedure for the internal examination of the colon. In general the term endoscopy is defined as a way of looking inside the body with the use of a flexible tube which has a small camera at the end of it and the medical equipment used for this purpose is termed as endoscope.
In general the colon endoscopy is performed in order to assess the blood in the stool or abdominal pain or persistent diarrhea or evaluate unexplained anemia, to determine the type and extent of inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and crohn’s disease or to follow a previous finding of polyps, colon cancer or a family history of colon cancer or to obtain tissue specimen for biopsy or to screen for colorectal cancer or for evaluation of abnormal x-rays of the GI tract etc.
Before going for colon endoscopy test you need to clean up your colon and for this purpose you are provided with the medicine and asked to consume only liquid before the test is conducted. The day on which the test is to be conducted you are asked not to eat or drink anything including water.
The doctor will inform you in advance regarding the time when you need to stop any intake of food in solid or liquid form. You will also be advised to take the laxative in the night before or on the day the test is to be conducted as given by the doctor in order to clean the colon.
